Stop Migraines Before They Start With Botox
Migraine is a common neurological disease that affects 39 million American adults and children. Some people can experience up to 15 migraines a month.
The attack of a migraine can leave you sensitive to sounds, light, and certain smells. It can cause you to feel throbbing pain in your head and scalp muscles and bring on nausea to the point of vomiting.
If you’re looking for relief for your migraines, our team of professionals at Neurology Consultants of Arizona in Scottsdale, led by board-certified neurologist Luay Shayya, MD, can help minimize the pain of your migraines and even prevent them. Our treatments can stop your headaches and give you much-needed relief.
Treatment for migraines
When you hear the word “Botox,” you might think of cosmetic injections to help get rid of the appearance of wrinkles on your face. But Botox® actually does far more. Patients who were receiving Botox to plump up their skin started to notice that they weren’t having as many headaches, which sparked deeper research.
Botox has now been known as a proven, preventive treatment for chronic migraine for almost 10 years.
How Botox works for migraines
Botox was approved in 2010 to help patients who were suffering from migraines. But why? Because Botox paralyzes your muscles by blocking signals from your brain to your nerves.
When we administer Botox, it interrupts the signal between your brain and your nerve endings, blocking their communication. This action stops the pain from getting to the area where your migraine develops, making Botox a successful, preventive treatment.
The Botox procedure
When you come in to see us for your procedure, we make sure you’re comfortable and relaxed.
To prevent your migraines, we may give you 30-40 shots, with 15-20 on each side of your head. These shots focus particularly on your temples, the base of your neck, and the back of your neck. We can also add additional shots to a specific area that might be a place you feel pain frequently.
Your session takes about 10-15 minutes. Your symptoms should start to improve in 10-14 days and the benefits should last about three months. We also recommend treatment every 12 weeks for preventive maintenance, to ensure that your migraines don’t come back.
Side effects, if any, are rare. You could experience an allergic reaction, which includes shortness of breath, swollen legs, or hives. We continue to monitor you throughout your treatments for your safety and progress.
